Another New Initiative to Reach Out to Women in Distress

New Delhi: November 26, 2025: (PIB Delhi//Women's Screen Desk):

Despite numerous efforts and initiatives by the government, the number of crimes against women shows no sign of decreasing. Therefore, it is repeatedly felt that more steps need to be taken. Considering this need, a new helpline number has now been launched. There is not only hope but also complete confidence that this number will help in curbing crimes against women.

The National Commission for Women has rolled out a new 24×7 short code helpline — 14490 to ensure quicker and more accessible support for women in distress across the country. This toll-free number serves as an easy-to-recall short code connected to NCW’s existing helpline 7827170170, enabling women to seek assistance without any cost or delay.

The new short code strengthens NCW’s ongoing efforts to provide immediate help to women facing violence, harassment, or any form of distress. As the first point of contact, the helpline will continue to offer guidance, facilitate coordination with relevant authorities, and support timely intervention.

NCW encourages citizens, community groups, institutions, and partners to widely share this information so that more women are aware of the helpline services available to them at all times.

Many laws and regulations have been enacted for women. Despite this, why haven't women been abused? Why are they repeatedly harassed? Why do cases of harassment drag on for so long? Sometimes it's a husband's extramarital affair, sometimes dowry cases, sometimes a husband's second or third marriage, sometimes pressure from a boss at work, sometimes some form of fraud...! Why doesn't this injustice and harassment stop? In our country's culture, marital relationships were considered to last for seven lifetimes. Where have we reached, those who used to stay together for life? Live-in relationships? Yet, there's no happiness or peace in life? Murders of girls every day! Women every day! Our society, which worships the nine forms of the Goddess... and we, the people who worship Kanjak...! Who has cast an evil eye on us? What abyss have we fallen into?

Answers to these questions are sought only by those who have felt pain due to these incidents. But God finds those who are meant to be a means of alleviating people's suffering. In this case, God found Mamta Kumari. Mamta Kumari is currently an active member of the National Commission for Women and has been completely dedicated to eliminating women's oppression for years.

National Commission for Women (NCW) member Mamta Kumari on Thursday directed police to resolve all pending women's grievances heard during her visit within 15 days.

Kumari held a meeting with women from diverse backgrounds, attended by officials  from district administration, Commissionerate Police, Ludhiana Rural police, and Khanna police. 

During the session, women from various areas shared grievances related to domestic violence, dowry and other harassment issues. Of the 44 complaints received, majority of them were settled on the spot, with strict orders issued for the remaining cases.

Kumari assured swift resolution and directed the district magistrate to form a committee to monitor each case. She also instructed police officials to take firm action against perpetrators of atrocities against women.

"Women must register complaints fearlessly. The NCW is committed to delivering justice to every woman," Kumari emphasized.She urged them to prioritize women’s welfare, address their challenges promptly, and ensure the effective implementation of support programs. She also spoke about the 'Tere Mere Sapne' Centre, a significant step toward empowering youth for successful marriages. 

She highlighted that these centres provide expert counselling on emotional, social, and psychological aspects of marriage, equipping individuals with the tools for healthy family relationships.

Rajesh S Balouria“Amla holds immense nutritional value and health benefits,” said Dr Kulvir Kaur, Assistant Home Scientist, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), while demonstrating the making of amla murabba during the monthly training camp of women’s wing of PAU Kisan Club. In all, 147 rural women (72) and farmers (75) attended the training camps of the PAU Kisan Club, held under the leadership of Dr MS Bhullar, Director of Extension Education.

Dr (Mrs) Rupinder Kaur Toor, Associate Director (Skill Development), in her welcome remarks, advocated financial progress through the adoption of women centric avenues such as value addition and agro-processing. 

Mrs Kanwaljit Kaur and Mrs Kuldeep Kaur gave practical trainings in the making of chawanprash as well as amla pickle and powder.

Dr Prerna Kapila, Course Coordinator, informed about the skill development programmes aimed at sustainability of the rural community via socio-economic expansion.

Dr Lavleesh Garg, Extension Scientist, proposed a vote of thanks.

Meanwhile, during the camp for the men’s wing of the club, Dr Tarundeep Kaur Dhaliwal, Agronomist; Dr Amarjit Singh, Senior Extension Specialist (Plant Pathology); and Dr Vivek Sharma, Soil Scientist, focused on weed management in rabi crops, diseases management in wheat, and soil testing for need-based use of fertilizers, respectively. Besides, Dr Harpinder Kaur, an expert of Consumer Science, talked about the right selection of utensils for cooking healthy food with thrust on the use of stainless steel instead of plastic.

The Club Secretary Satvir Singh welcomed the experts and the farmers, while the Club President Manpreet Grewal proposed a vote of thanks. The PAU Kisan Club training camp was held under the guidance of Dr TS Riar, Additional Director Communication and Dr Kuldeep Singh, Programme Associate Director.

PAU Students hold women empowerment camp

A women empowerment camp was organized by the final year students of B.Sc Horticulture (2024-25), Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), at village Gahaur, Ludhiana, under the Rural Awareness Work Experience (RAWE) programme. The camp was organized under the guidance of the Programme Coordinator Dr Jaswinder Singh Brar, Principal Fruit Scientist; and the Course in charge Dr Simrat Singh, Scientist, Department of Floriculture and Landscaping, PAU. The primary objective of the camp was to provide a platform to the women entrepreneurs to showcase their handicraft items and explore additional opportunities for skill enhancement in horticulture and allied ventures. 

During the camp, Chetna and Jashan apprised the participants of various short term courses and training programmes being provided at the Skill Development Center, PAU, to enhance the required skills and impart knowledge in horticulture and allied subsidiaries such as making of jams, candies, squashes, pickles, etc. In addition, Jahnvi and Riya disseminated information about various government schemes available for the startups. Gurpreet educated participants about the importance of forming the Self-help Groups, to avail the subsidies for  women entrepreneurs.

An exhibition of locally made handicrafts was displayed by the farm women namely Smt Sukhwinder Kaur, Smt Harjot Kaur and Smt Gurmeet Kaur. It included diverse range of products comprising embroidery, hand woven folding fans, table fabric cover, knitted sweaters, etc. The students, namely, Sakshi, Harshdeep Kaur, Vishnavi, Himmat Singh, Ranjit Singh and Muskan of the RAWE programme actively participated for the successful conduct of this camp.

Women for Afghan Women (WAW) vehemently condemns the decision by the Taliban de facto authorities announced on December 26, 2022, barring all women employees of national and international organizations from going to work with immediate effect. 

As a leading women's rights organization in Afghanistan for over two decades, we believe in the full equality and the right to a life of dignity for all human beings and remain committed to working towards a world in which Afghan women and girls enjoy peace, justice, equality, the freedom to participate in all spheres of life, and the right to live without fear and oppression.

Our brave women colleagues are an indispensable and essential part of our organization that serve as members of our board, executive management, and operational staff. Women are an integral part of our daily, life-saving programs that provide humanitarian, medical, legal, counseling, educational, and other support to any individual that comes to our organization for assistance. They are essential to the social services and operational activities that WAW implements every day.

Without our women staff, we would not and cannot exist. We join the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Afghanistan in reminding the Taliban that "Any such order would violate the most fundamental rights of women, as well as be a clear breach of humanitarian principles".

The Taliban should immediately end this brutal and senseless policy and allow women to return safely to work. No organization, country, economy, or community can thrive without the equal, full, and meaningful participation of women.

She Haat launched at Bagh Pashog (Himachal)

Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur Ji inaugurated Rs. 70 lakh ‘She Haat’, a way site amenities, Rural Haat, local shop, restaurant, guest room and Kaushal vikas Kendra at Bagh Pashog village in Pachhad assembly constituency of Sirmour district, virtually from Shimla today. 

The project is unique in the entire country and will create self-employment opportunities for the women of the area

Jai Ram Thakur Ji said that the whole project was being run by a group of twenty-five SHG women to empower them for self-employment by selling traditional, natural, organic produce and also serve Pahari food, and provide homestay facilities to the visitors. He said that this project was a unique project in the entire country for women and by the women to serve all.

'She Haat' have modern amenities and will definitely boost tourism in the area

Chief Minister said that the ‘She Haat’ also have a two bed room guest house, solar power plant, rain water harvesting system and waste composting, acupressure track and air purifying plants. It has e-vehicle for women to easily ply from their houses, will also be used to ferry natural spring water, he added.

Jai Ram Thakur Ji said that the women in this ‘She Haat’would work in three shifts. He said that the State Government was committed to expand this experiment in other parts of the State as it would provide gainful employment opportunities to the rural women of the State. He said that this would not only provide a glimpse of the State’s culture, cuisine and tradition, but also make women folk self reliant.  Chief Minister said that people of the Pachhad area had given their wholehearted support in the bye elections and BJP candidate Reena Kashyap won by a huge margin. He urged the people of the State to elect honest, hardworking and dedicated candidates in the Panchayati Raj Institutions elections so that the pace of development get boost in at the grass-root level. 

MP Suresh Kashyap said that ‘She Haat’ was an innovative scheme envisioned by the Chief Minister for women empowerment and making them economically independent. He said that State Government has initiated several schemes for ensuring empowerment of the women and other weaker sections of the society. He said that it was the BJP Government in the State that made a provision of 50 per cent reservation in the PRIs for the women.

Ha Noi, Viet Nam–Twenty-one business leaders in Viet Nam joining a forum hosted by UN Women have signed the CEO Statement of Support for the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs) as they charted the next steps to achieve gender equality in the workplace, marketplace and community.

The companies endorsed the Statement in the presence of the “Equality Means Business” forum organizers – UN Women, the EU Delegation in Viet Nam and the Viet Nam Women Entrepreneur Council (VWEC) under the Viet Nam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI). They agreed to continue encouraging more businesses in the country to sign on.

Established by UN Women and United Nations Global Compact, the WEPs promote business practices that empower female workers. Signatories commit to take seven steps including giving women senior corporate posts and treating all workers fairly. UN Women also works to promote women in the private sector through its WeEmpowerAsia programme, which is funded by the European Union. The programme involves Viet Nam and six other Asian countries.

During the forum, the company representatives exchanged ideas on enhancing enterprise competitiveness, promotion of women’s participation in supply chains, and strategies for investing in women’s business leadership and talent. They also underlined the need for strong corporate leadership to scale ambitions into actions.

Elisa Fernandez Saenz, UN Women Viet Nam Country Representative, opened the gathering noting how empowering women strengthens the bottom line of businesses: “There is a direct correlation between investing in women’s employment and GDP per capita: countries with greater gender equality have faster-growing and more competitive economies. Likewise, businesses with greater gender equality display higher returns, higher levels of productivity and competitiveness, with better labour force and work environments.”

Nguyen Thi Tuyet Minh, Chairwoman of the Viet Nam Women Entrepreneur Council (VWEC), shared at the forum: “Expansion of employment opportunities, dedication and promotion for women and men in community, at the workplace and in supply chain will exploit potentiality, strength of all. This is the perfect supplement and foundation to achieve the prosperity and sustainability of each country and company.”    

Tom Corrie, First Counsellor and Deputy Head of Cooperation Section at the European Union Delegation to Viet Nam said: “Viet Nam ranks the 3rd among ASEAN countries, in terms of gender gap score and in terms of economic participation and opportunities. Obviously, further efforts need to be placed on women economic empowerment. And I am glad to see European companies signing CEO’ commitment to Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs), promoted by the WeEmpowerAsia programme, for which the EU is pleased to contribute.”

At present, there are 3,358 WEPs signatories worldwide, of which 67 are in Viet Nam including the 21 new signatories that had signed at the event.

The event, held ahead of World Entrepreneurs Day on August 21, saw the participation of Vietnamese as well as European businesses based in the country that highlighted the need to strengthen trade and cooperation links between European and Vietnamese markets as both sides continue advancing women’s economic rights and opportunities. This is Dilhara. A Fighter-A Winner. She got every thing with her own dedication. She was a teacher. She gave up her profession and started to work on her hobby.
